National Museum of Ireland

At The Spencer Hotel

The National Museum of Ireland has four locations, one in Mayo and three different locations in Dublin. Each museum specialises in a different area; archaeology, decorative arts & history and natural history. For more information on the natural history museum click here.

The national museum of archaeology is located on Kildare on the same grounds as Leinster House. The museum houses many different exhibitions including; Ireland’s Gold, Viking Ireland, Ancient Egypt and prehistoric Ireland to name a few. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and these change frequently throughout the year, so it is always best to check their website to see what exhibitions will be taking place when you visit.

The building itself should also be taken in when visiting the museum as it is an architectural landmark. Neo-classical influences can be seen and the domed rotunda is modelled on the Pantheon in Rome. The floor is also a sight to take in so remember to look down and see scenes from classical mythology.

The museum of decorative arts & history is located in Collins Barracks and houses a mix of exhibitions from the 1916 rising and the stories of the Irish at War 1914-15 to Eileen Gray designer and a Dubliner’s collection of Asian art. There is a huge amount to see in this museum, with the grounds also having significant historical importance. Collins Barracks was an army base for 200 years and was name after the important Irish figure Michael Collins. This museum is great to visit if you want to learn about different aspects of Irish history.

Both museums are easily accessible by LUAS or on foot from the Spencer hotel and are free of charge, so it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon.
